Major Jason Watson is an American hero. We are all learning real time who he is and how utterly profound his protest is.
Major Watson is a 17-year active-duty service member. He’s a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, a career logistics officer, a NATO officer, and a decorated veteran who volunteered for a 365-day tour in Afghanistan and later served in Kuwait and Iraq. Public posts circulating after his arrest also describe him as someone who led personnel across multiple countries, managed billions of dollars in military assets, and served as a Sexual Assault Response Coordinator supporting fellow service members.
Active-duty service members live under rules most civilians never have to think about. Department of Defense policy restricts political activity by members of the Armed Forces, especially when they are on active duty and in uniform. Commissioned officers also face Article 88 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which prohibits contemptuous words against officials including the President and Vice President.
The Capitol steps are also not a normal public sidewalk. The U.S. Capitol Police state that demonstration activity on Capitol grounds is allowed only in designated areas. Capitol Police guidance lists the steps of the United States Capitol among areas where groups are prohibited from demonstrating
So no, Major Watson did not stumble into this, he knew the price he’d pay.
