I am a molecular biologist who lived and breathed infectious-disease molecular testing from H1N1 through COVID, roughly 2009 though 2020. I helped launch diagnostic products globally to respond to the epidemic in front of us and prepare laboratories for the next one.

I understand assay performance, false negatives, false positives, specimen quality, clinical sensitivity, regulatory review, laboratory capacity, manufacturing, supply chains and the monumental amount of work required to move a diagnostic product from a scientist’s bench into hospitals around the world.

I also understand that outbreaks begin in uncertainty. Scientists revise guidance as evidence accumulates. Tests fail. Supply chains break. Institutions make mistakes.

That is why disciplined leadership matters.

COVID-19 was an extraordinarily difficult biological emergency. President Donald Trump added a second emergency inside the first one. Scientists, physicians, hospitals, governors and federal agencies had to manage the virus while also managing a president who judged information according to whether it made him look successful.
